The Kgalagadi's largest rest camp and administrative headquarters, on the bank of the dry Nossob riverbed. Reception, shop, fuel, restaurant, information centre and swimming pool. This is the only camp in the park with 24-hour electricity and cellphone reception, so it is the sensible first and last night of any Kgalagadi trip. Book far ahead: the camp fills a year out over school holidays.

Auob River, western park boundary, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Camping and chalets on the banks of the Auob River on the western boundary, a 2.5 hour drive from Twee Rivieren and hard against the Namibian border. Reception, swimming pool, shop and fuel. Solar power runs during the day only and there is no telephone or cellphone reception, so tell people at home before you go quiet. The Raptor Interpretation Centre is worth an hour.

Nossob riverbed, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Camping, cottages and a guesthouse set inside the dry Nossob riverbed, surrounded by tree savannah roughly halfway up the eastern park road. This is the classic big-cat camp and the waterhole hide is the reason most people book it. Shop and fuel on site, but stock up properly in Upington first.

Augrabies Falls National Park

Camping and chalets a short walk from the 56-metre falls, where the Orange River drops into an 18km granite gorge. Roughly 40 level sites on hard-packed ground with some shade and shared power points, so bring a 20m-plus extension lead. Camp lighting is minimal at night. Go in autumn or spring; midsummer here is brutal.

Mokala National Park

Mokala National Park, off the N12, ±80km south-west of Kimberley

SANParks' newest park, a rare-antelope breeding reserve in koppieveld and open plains south-west of Kimberley. Motswedi is the camping site; Mosu Lodge and Lilydale carry the chalets and reception functions. Two entrances off the N12, Lilydale 37km south of Kimberley and Mosu 57km. No fuel or fresh produce inside the park; Modderrivier is the closest filling station.

Namaqua National Park — Skilpad

Skilpad Rest Camp, Namaqua National Park, near Kamieskroon

The eastern, flower-famous section of Namaqua National Park above Kamieskroon. In August and September the Skilpad fields are one of the best wildflower displays in the country, which also means accommodation books out months ahead. Outside flower season it is quiet, cheap and empty. Fuel and shops in Kamieskroon and Garies.

Namaqua National Park — Coastal Campsites (Groenrivier)

Groenrivier section, Namaqua National Park coastal strip

A string of remote, unfenced campsites along the Namaqua coastal strip between Groenrivier and Kotzesrus. There is no shop, no power and generally no water, so arrive fully self-sufficient with everything including drinking water and firewood. High clearance is strongly advised and a 4x4 is sensible after rain. This is the most underrated stretch of coast in South Africa.

Sendelingsdrif, |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, near Alexander Bay

A mountain desert of rugged kloofs and improbable succulents, with basic camping at Sendelingsdrif and riverside sites such as Potjiespram, De Hoop, Richtersberg and Kokerboomkloof. SANParks states that sedan vehicles are not permitted and that internal roads are farm tracks mainly suited to 4x4, though high-clearance kombis and LDVs do travel in the park. Deep-sanded riverbeds and rough mountain passes mean convoy travel is advised, single vehicles must sign a report-back agreement, and night driving is not allowed. Carry all your own water, fuel and food. A pont crosses to Namibia at Sendelingsdrif.

Tankwa Karoo National Park

Tankwa Karoo National Park, Roggeveld escarpment, Northern Cape

High, dry and gloriously empty semi-desert on the Northern Cape side of the Roggeveld escarpment. Camping at Perdekloof and Langkloof plus scattered cottages. Access is over long, sharp gravel, and the R355 has a reputation for shredding tyres, so carry two spares and drop your pressures. Some of the darkest night skies in the country.

Witsand Kalahari Nature Reserve, Postmasburg, 8420, Northern Cape (±45km gravel off the Griquatown–Groblershoop road)

A 3,500ha island of blinding white sand inside a sea of red Kalahari dune, and the home of the famous Brulsand, the roaring dunes that boom when the sand is hot and dry. Ten self-catering chalets, group accommodation and caravan and camping sites, plus pools, a kiosk, a bird hide and a signposted botanical meander. The final 45km is gravel.

Fifteen thousand hectares of granite koppies and succulent veld on Springbok's doorstep, with a seven-site bush camp, a bush hut and chalets. No electricity at the sites: gas lamps are provided and the showers run off gas geysers. A small shop and restaurant open in flower season only. No fuel inside the reserve, so fill up in Springbok.

A 7,500ha private reserve on the north bank of the Orange River, 14km upstream of Augrabies Falls. Spacious grassed stands under camelthorn with standard or private options, plus glamping tents and riverside log cabins. Rafting, paddling, fishing, sunset barge cruises and game drives run in-house. Access is 25km from Kakamas of which about 17km is well-maintained gravel; sedans and caravans manage it fine.

A two-hectare campsite on the river bank of a working table-grape, raisin and wine farm established by the Hanekom family in 1970. Around twenty stands, ablution blocks and braai facilities, with self-catering chalets and a large lapa alongside. The cellar does wine and brandy tastings and the farm deli is worth the stop on its own. Busy and loud over December; quiet the rest of the year.

Twelve tree-shaded, grassed stands separated by river-reed screens, each with its own food prep area, tap, braai place and 220V point. Privately owned and deliberately unhurried, with hot-water ablutions and flush toilets. No 4x4 needed, but the gravel from Vioolsdrift over the Geelkrans Pass is corrugated and stony, so check your spare before you leave the tar.

The main caravan park in Springbok, on the airport road just off the N7 and an hour from the Vioolsdrift border. Fifty-four grassed stands and sixteen on hard ground, all with water, power and braai, plus chalets, bungalows, a pool and laundry, ringed by granite koppies. Ablutions are wheelchair friendly. The obvious base for the August and September flower season and for runs into the Richtersveld and the coast.

Ninety-odd sandy stands right on the beach less than 2km from Port Nolloth, each screened by trimmed bush windbreaks, with taps, power points, braai stands and key-controlled ablutions. The camp is fenced with regular foot patrols. The sheltered lagoon is the safest swimming on this coast and the bay is a long-standing boating, fishing and crayfish spot. No shade to speak of, and the Atlantic fog rolls in most mornings. Ask for Lorraine Phillips or Joseph Cloete.

Namaqua National Park's Skilpad section is 27km away, which makes this the practical flower-season base if the park itself is full.

A working sheep farm on the Bokkeveld escarpment with camping and restored stone cottages, a waterfall in the gorge and some of the best short hikes in the region. Nieuwoudtville is the bulb capital of the world and the winter and spring displays here are a different event to the Namaqualand daisy fields further north. Book well ahead for August and September.
